Autumn & Winter Residencies

The Field Station’s Autumn & Winter Residencies take place in the depths of the polar darkness, against a white, treeless landscape where Arctic nature is at its most savage but arguably most beautiful.

Accessible only by snowmobile and ski, only the most adventurous artists will discover the wonders of remote island isolation and experience the magic of the always spectacular Northern Lights.

Autumn and Winter on Ingøy are the perfect environments for interior self-reflection (just 4 hours of light a day) as well as pushing yourself out of your comfort zone by surrendering to the raw Arctic elements (winds of up to 90mph).

Whether you need time for reflection and consolidation, time for research, time for re-thinking and clarification, time for visioning and dreaming, time for resting and re-gathering, time for focused work together or individually, The Field Station’s approach, atmosphere and unique natural environment makes it all possible.

Staying at The Field Station means embracing a simpler way of living: fires and stoves are lit and tended to, water is collected from the mountain stream, food is prepared and eaten together. On the flip side, there is plenty of high-speed internet access, should you need it.

Artists can also enjoy a range of other activities on the island during the Autumn and Winter months, such as cross-country skiing, wood burning saunas, snow baths and polar night bonfires.

“It is good to feel small beneath the sparkling northern lights, small beside the mighty sea. Nature is so close to us up here. My troubles and difficulties just shrivel up. I like being insignificant.”

- Asa Larsson

Funded Residencies

The Field Station offers funded Autumn & Winter Residencies to individual and groups of artists working in all disciplines, at all career levels and from across the globe. These opportunities are awarded following an open call and application process.

Our fully-funded residency programme includes all accommodation, workspace, food & drink, and a generous weekly stipend to provide artists with the time, space, freedom and financial support to work, reflect, research, rest, recuperate; whatever is needed. The time and space is yours.

The duration of the residencies are flexible; however, we recommend a minimum stay of 1 week and a maximum stay of 8 weeks.

Independently-funded Residencies

The Field Station also provides independently-funded Autumn & Winter residencies that provide opportunities for artists with their own funding, such as from academic institutions, public funding or foundations. We also work with individual artists to help them secure funding.

Independently-funded residencies take place throughout the year. Artists of all disciplines and backgrounds are welcome and that includes writers, producers, directors, curators, academics and those working in any creative field.

The duration of the residencies are flexible, however, we recommend a minimum stay of 1 week and a maximum stay of 8 weeks.
