At 71° North, The Field Station is the world's northernmost artist residency centre. Our outstanding site on the small and remote Arctic island of Ingøy is uniquely placed to offer artists the chance to truly break from routine, radically remove themselves from the day to day, experience nature at its most powerful and embed themselves within a small island community.

The extreme latitude makes the island of Ingøy a stunning landscape of ever-changing contrasts. Winters of snow-covered darkness and breathtaking displays of Northern Lights quickly turn to vibrant and luscious summers where the sun never sets. A weaving Arctic coastline encircles ancient, jagged mountains that puncture the windswept expanse, where no trees can grow. From desolate tundra to flourishing archipelago and back again, this otherworldly environment provides the ideal setting for artists of all disciplines and backgrounds to develop, create, experiment, research and reflect on their creative practice – or even rediscover it 

Visiting a remote Arctic island like Ingøy is not for the faint-hearted. At that extreme latitude, you are plunged deep into the Arctic circle, on a grid line far above Iceland, Alaska, Canada and even Siberia. The weather is unpredictable (with winds of up to 100mph), the terrain is wild and unforgiving, the boat crossings can be rough, and the toilets are outdoors! Those looking for easy, modern luxury should look elsewhere.
